Gonzo pities a fool

If you've read the Inquirer or listened to WIP this afternoon you've likely run across the story of poor old Dan Leone.  Let Gonzo give you the background:

Last week, the Eagles fired Leone.

Like a lot of Philadelphians, Leone was upset when Dawkins became a Bronco. So he did what a 32-year-old does these days: He vented on Facebook. "Dan is [expletive] devastated about Dawkins signing with Denver. . .Dam Eagles R Retarted!!"

I shouldn't have put it up there," Leone said. "I was ticked off, and I let my emotions go, but I didn't offend any one person or target a specific individual. I was just upset that we lost such a great guy. Dawkins was one of my favorite players. I made a mistake."

Less than two days after posting the Dawkins remarks, Leone said, he was contacted by Leonard Bonacci, the team's director of event operations. According to Leone, Bonacci said they needed to talk about Leone's Facebook page, and Leone agreed. Leone - who deleted the comment - figured that the two would sit down and that he could apologize to Bonacci in person. But Leone said Bonacci never got back to him after that.

Two days later, Leone said, he received a call from Rachel Vitagliano, the team's guest services manager. Leone said she fired him over the phone. The conversation lasted less than 10 minutes.

No warning. No suspension. No face-to-face meeting. Just a quick call to tell Leone he'd been terminated.

I may sound like an old fart at the age of 30, but this story just illustrates the pussification of the facebook generation. Behavior is without consequences! I'm just expressing myself! You mean you're going to fire me because I put up pictures of myself doing 12-foot bong hits? No fair!

Cry me a river. Anyone who disagrees with me, do me a favor and stroll into work tomorrow, gather all your coworkers (just to make it 100% public), then locate your boss and call him a retard.  See what kind of response this elicits. Oh, and make sure you do this in an unskilled job where you are 100% expendable because there are literally thousands of other people who would love to have your job (especially in a climate where a lot of people would love to have any job).

If I pity Dan Leone for anything, it's the fact that he doesn't know how to spell retard.

I like how the inquirer and espn is making a big deal about this. if gonzo or one of the espn anchors bashed their respective organizations on their facebook pages, i think that we would see the same result

It's a joke. It's such a non-story.

When people are being laid off for purely economic reasons why should I shed a tear for this moron?

Do you think this would make espn.com and the like if it was in a market like K.C.? How about Buffalo? I'm all for taking shots at organizations/corporations when they deserve it, but we're making this guy into Rosa Parks.

I heard this guy say the Eagles "took his dream away from him". Oh really. Dream bigger or take some online courses. I just want to open the sports page and actually read about sports once in awhile. That's my dream.

Seriously, the guy should have know his limitations. For instance, he could have said something like "So sad to see Dawk go." or something to that affect. Going the "retart" route was clearly over the top. Btw...no sane person should consider ripping their job on a public website. Trust me, it happens all the time, and corporations usually find out about it, and respond the same way. This is really par for the course. Perhaps that is an indictment on corporations, but it is what it is. You should expect to be fired if you rip your employer on a public website. Trust me.

Actually if this was his dream he took his dream way from himself. People are dumb. This just proves my theory that most people are morons. It's not like this is the first case of facebook biting people in the ass, you hear it on the news more than I'd like to (since I'd like to hear about it never).

This is just a part of the larger issue that people tend to say and do things on the internet they'd NEVER do in real life, and if more people thought like that stupid crap like this wouldn't happen.

If he just said 'what would my boss think if i said the eagles r retarded' to their face? Then I better not say it online either. When you work for someone you can criticize them all you want but don't expect not to be fired if you get caught.

And I think this would be news anywhere regardless of team because of the 'novelty' of the avenue in which the guy was fired, they love this crap - and i hate social networking so things like this make me feel a little better.

The whole "ESPN hates Philadlephia" complex has to stop

I didn't mention it in the post but the Gonzo story also brings up that Leone has a physical affliction - I guess to make the Eagles look even worse (Look they fired a handicapped guy!). Meanwhile it has ZERO bearing on the event. If I were Leone I'd be disgusted with the reporting.

Bad job articulating my point earlier. Sorry if it sounded like I was implying "espn hates Philly". I like to think I'm more objective than the guy who blogs in his Mom's basement while waiting on hold to talk on WIP. My point is the locals made a story out of a total non-story. People like to bemoan the fact that Philly has a bad national rep, but sometimes the wounds are self inflicted, This doesn't make it to ESPN unless one of the local scribes make it a big story.

Not sure I still made my point. My degree is in marketing, so I'm swimming upstream here...

Bob - I get your point - there are a lot of nitwits that perpetrate the nonsense heaped on the fanbase as a whole.

Like Cataldi and all of his callers.

Except that isn't the fanbase EXACTLY who calls cataldi?

John - I'm not getting your point.

Most people who call Cataldi = dumb
Most people who peruse this blog = smart

There are more people who call cataldi that are the eagles fanbase than read this blog
the callers to Cataldi and Eskin and the like are (sadly) more representative of the average member of the Eagles fanbase (and philadlephia sports fans in general)

The average phillies fan doesn't read thegoodphight.com and still thinks Abreu was a useless bum and that Raul Ibanez is an upgrade over Pat Burrell.

My point was that, sadly, the WIP callers are 'more representative' of the fanbase of Philadelphia than the bloggers and blog readers (it's why i can't listen to philadelphia sports radio any more, i think even jody mac is a hack).

Thus the grief that the philadelphia fan base takes is self inflicted.

For point of reference, I don't think Philadlephia is a blue collar town but think that the 'rocky influence' permeates the fan base (and vince papali who i never heard of until that stupid movie) to a point where not only do they want good to great players to win they need ot have a certain personality that the fans can identify with as 'blue collar' lunch pail - hence the popularity of mediocre players like aaron rowand or reggie evans because of thei 'grittiness'

David Eckstein would be a HUGE star in philadelphia
