We'll miss you B-Dawk

Derrick Brooks was cut by the Bucs.  Ray Lewis is looking to move on from the Ravens.  Brian Dawkins made a business decision and signed with the Denver Broncos.

This is the sporting world we live in these days.  We all wanted to see Brian Dawkins play out his last remaining games and retire a Philadelphia Eagle. Didn't happen.   But, to be honest, it's likely that Dawkins will retire a Bird, albeit after a brief interruption in the Rocky Mountains.

To be clear on my position, Brian Dawkins is my all time favorite Eagle.  In terms of the total package - his play, his character, his fanatical passion for the game - Dawkins may never be matched.  He plays the game with an uncompromising fury that mirrors the way true Eagle followers conduct their fandom.  I will definitely miss his play for Sundays to come.

I may be in the minority, but I don't see this as a business decision by the Birds front office.  By that I mean, this wasn't a money decision, this was a personnel decision, and the Eagles organization obviously thinks that they may be better off on the football field without Brian Dawkins.  Today, that outlook may seem ham-fisted and incompetent, but we've been down this road before.    We'll have to wait and see.

We're all going to miss Brian Dawkins, but don't let your emotions get the best of you.  Players moving on in the twilight of their careers is par for the course these days.  This isn't a situation unique to the Philadelphia Eagles, it's the market standard.

In case it gets missed in the other thread, I heard dawkins on ESPN radio today - mentioned repeatedly how his age wasn't a factor to the Broncos. It seemed to me that the Eagles felt his age was a factor in re-signing him and they weren't going to offer more due to his age.

I just saw Derrick Gunn's phone interview on CSN. Dawkins was choking up the entire time before ending the interview early. I feel for the guy.

He'll be back one day to retire as a Bird. I'm sure of it.

This is probably the most-painful departure in my lifetime. Dawkins embodied everything I love about the Eagles. I don't know what you can do if you're the Eagles and someone makes an insane offer to the guy, though. He's going to be missed, and I think you're right. When he's done in Denver, he'll be back for a game or something, to retire as a bird.

This is my saddest day as a sports fan. Dawkins was my favorite athlete ever and now that I am a little older I appreciate even more as a man than an athlete.
I heard that CSN Derrick Gunn interview and it is sooo obvious Dawkins wanted to remain an Eagle.
Sad day indeed. Eagles made a mistake IMO by not locking him up earlier. (Ray Diddenger said pretty much the same thing.) They could have traded Mcnabb, they could cut Westbrook and it would not make affect me as much.

You and Ray Diddy are right - they should have never let it get this far. Which just tells me again that Dawkins just doesn't fit with their football plans.

Their football plans at this point seem to be "let all your free agents go and otherwise stand pat."

I know it's a weak FA class, but I was hoping they'd pull a trade for somebody that would help them in '09.

The off season isn't over yet...

The weekend is over, but this still stings. No amount of Natural Light will make this loss go away. But we move on and get back to monitoring draft picks and listening to fans make absurd trade suggestions. It only took me about 3 hours to find Cutler for McNabb rumors today, and I haven't even logged on to ProFootballTalk yet...

Bob - have you heard the Sheldon Brown for Boldin deal yet? Pure craziness.

Dave, I'll see your "Brown for Boldin", and raise you "our two first rounders for Calvin Johnson".

Apparently sources are overrated. And salary demands/cap ramifications are "for the suits". Throw in my new favorite, "at least Dan Snyder wants to win", and late April can't come quick enough.

I can't even listen to the morning show. We go through this EVERY year. They flip out when we don't sign everything is sight, and then, the FA's don't make a lick of difference with their teams. I legitimately cannot think of a guy who is out there that I really think the Eagles should be targeting. Housh was overpaid. We don't need a DT. DeAngelo Hall sucks. Id rather have a rookie RB than Ward. Seriously, who's out there? But, that should have been all the more reason to re-sign Dawk. It really wouldn't have costed them that much more, and wouldn't have compromised them. I'm ok moving on from Tra, but I never thought Dawk would go. They should reallocate the money to get some of their young guys locked up for the future. Maybe Bradley? Bunkley? Patterson?

When you say 'morning show' do you mean WIP? If so - how can you EVER listen to such drivel...it makes ESPN look cultured

That fullback from Seattle, Leonard Weaver, is pretty good (he blocks, runs and receives all better than league average), is young and he comes from a West Coast offense. He can be had fairly reasonably I think. He is someone the Eagles should try to pick up.

The most "legit" rumor I've heard is that if the Eagles sign Shawn Springs as some expect tomorrow, Sheldon Brown is on the trading block. I really hope that's erroneous (sorry for the big word). First, I really like Sheldon as a fan. Second, he would be a prime candidate to fill the safety void (as has been rumored for years it seems).

Angelo Cataldi basically admits he's a clown these days. I really want to meet his callers who look to him for actual knowledge. On second thought, maybe I don't.

ill miss b dawkins ,he was the lone eagle that i admired for not only his play but what he did off the field, brian if you read this im going to buy an orange number 20 jersey in your honor and wear it as proudly as i did your eagles jersey. i know ill miss ya, hope all the rest of you eagles fans feel like i do.keep up the big hits ,maybe youll be back ,if not good luck upset eagle fan may be broncos fan soon,i want a winner ,im tired of runner up!
