Demps not worthy?

I've heard a lot of speculation throughout the past week that the Birds might look to acquire a veteran safety because they don't believe Quintin Demps is read to be a starter in the NFL.  I wondered where the hell these rumors were coming from, well, I finally found the source - from Pro Football Weekly:

The Eagles are not yet convinced that Quintin Demps can be a full-time starter, we hear. But like Quintin Mikell, who took a few years to groom into the solid player he is now, Demps might need a few years to mature. The staff still likes him as a player but might not be entirely comfortable handing him a starting job, if one opens up.

Couple the above rumor with Demps playing a subpar NFC Championship game and you've got a recipe for rampant and unadulterated media speculation.  Demps sure wasn't "handed" the starting job in the playoff this past season, but he sure played a hell of a lot of free safety (with Dawkins more of a hybrid safety/linebacker) when Jim Johnson trotted out his three safety backfield in the postseason.  That shows me what the Eagles seem to think of the guy.  However, the Sheldon Brown could move to safety rumors have already started to crop up just like they did last offseason, and the offseason before that.

I don't doubt Brown's ability to play safety, but why move your best corner, and by Football Outsiders charting statistics, one of the top (if not the top) corners in the NFL to a different position?  I never really understood that argument unless some sort of injury crisis necessitated such a move.

The current argument goes something like this:  Why don't we move Brown to safety and slip Hanson into a full time starting spot opposite Asante Samuel?  Along with Mikell, we'd have one of the most dynamic and athletic defensive backfields in the league.

Who's playing nickel corner then hotshot?

Trae Williams?  Dimitri Patterson?  Jack Ikegwuono?  Shawn Springs?

Dime? Ummm......

If the Birds decide to nab a veteran safety, I'd presume it would be to challenge Demps for the starting spot next year, not to preempt his move to the starters role.  Demps has good college track record, he's got a chip (and a good head) on his shoulder(s), and he's a nice athlete.  I think Demps is going to be given every opportunity to assert himself as the starting free safety come training camp, and I think he runs with the opportunity.

As much as I love the draft, I don't get all these team & player grades given after one or two years into a players career. Look at some of the safeties that were projected to go to the Birds the last few years. Merriweather in New England and Phillips in New York aren't Pro Bowlers, but I haven't heard anyone criticize them like Demps after one year. Last game aside, the guy represented himself well in arguably the least rookie-friendly defense in the league.

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself but i think Demps can play. From NFL Draft Scout last year:

One of the elite pass thieves in college football, Demps' 17 interceptions were the most among active players in the NCAA in 2007 and rank second in Conference USA and school history. He is one of only seven players in college history to gain more than 400 yards (404) in returns on interceptions in a career, setting the league all-time record (331 yards in Conference USA competition).

The free safety has been a huge problem for not only opposing offensive coordinators, but also opposing special team coaches. In addition to his 17 interceptions, he ranks second in school annals with 24 pass deflections. He also ranks eighth in UTEP history with an average of 22.1 yards per kickoff return. Finding the end zone has become a fact of life for Demps, who scored on interceptions, kickoffs and fumble recoveries during his time with the Miners.

I do think Demps can play, that's why I think a lot of this debate is puzzling. He's fast, he's fearless, and he seems like he can grasp a playbook (for a rookie). The Eagles obviously need some depth there, but I don't think it's as bad as RB or TE.

I read the story about bringing Springs in and making him a safety. I guess that wouldn't be bad, but I would rather draft a guy like Chung out of Oregon and let Demps and Mikel get the reps.
