McNabb, Eagles talk future

News from ESPN.com indicated Donovan McNabb did in fact already meet with the Birds regarding a potential contract extension.  However, in reading through Michael Smith's piece, it's really tough to separate fact from fiction.

Independent of the meeting, the source said that McNabb may hold off on further extension talks until he see how that Eagles improve themselves in the offseason via free agency and/or trades.

According to a source, McNabb and agent Fletcher Smith quietly met with Eagles coach Andy Reid and Eagles president Joe Banner for several hours last Tuesday at the team's complex in Philadelphia, before Reid and Banner traveled to the league's Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

The source said the sides cleared the air once and for all on Reid's Week 12 benching of McNabb in Baltimore. They also held preliminary, informal discussions about a contract extension, the source said. The source said the parties had preferred to keep the meeting confidential as they work through various issues beyond the benching.

Those contract talks may not resume any time soon. McNabb would like the Eagles to add to their already solid core pieces that would make them an even stronger championship contender before engaging in serious negotiations on an extension. McNabb, 32, is under contract for two more seasons.

Although McNabb wants to remain in Philadelphia, if the Eagles aren't successful in significantly upgrading an offense that needs help at wide receiver, running back and offensive tackle (veterans Jon Runyan and Tra Thomas are free agents beginning Friday), not only may McNabb drop his request for a new contract he may consider going as far as to ask the Eagles to trade him.

No "source" is mentioned in connection to the more speculative sections of the piece including McNabb's desire to potentially be traded if more weapons aren't acquired.  Again, where does fact end and fiction begin?  It's not really clear.

However, Michael Smith neglected to report a couple critical pieces of information.  McNabb's salary escalates to 10 million plus territory in 2010 with ZERO cap hit if the Birds feel they want to rid themselves of the quarterback.  Furthermore, according to his deal, McNabb can void the final three years of his deal if he remains on the roster through the 2010 season.

It would only be prudent for McNabb to assess the team's short term future because he either signs a contract extension now, or most likely in 2010/2011 with the team of his choosing.  Given his injury history, this may be a bit of a risk, but I wouldn't fault McNabb for keeping his options open.  I guarantee this will play out in a overly negative light on the local airwaves, but McNabb still has plenty of value both in Philadelphia and around the league.  Looks to me like McNabb's just being smart, and if he uses his clout to squeeze more talent out of the front office, more power to us all.

Note:  Howard Eskin seems to think the source here is McNabb himself.  If that's the case, McNabb ("The source said the parties had preferred to keep the meeting confidential") is just a petulant little weasel who wants his ego stroked for the sake of it.
