The Birds locked up safety depth with a
one-year agreement with Sean Jones, former safety of the Cleveland Browns. Jones looks like a promising player, but we've had our share of good lookers who signed one-year deals in the past. Think William James, Jabar Gaffney, and Kris Wilson. I'm an optimist with this guy because his numbers are too good to ignore. However, numbers
may not tell the whole story.
Jones is a natural strong safety, so if he's able to lock down a starting spot, Quintin Mikell could be moving to free safety. Or the Birds could just continue with what they did last year rotating Quintin Demps in at free safety with Jones playing the Dawkins replacement hybrid linebacker spot on passing downs.
The move should bring a high level of competition when come Training Camp 2009.
I like this move, Jones seems like he can be a player and will fit into the Birds' defensive scheme well.
Enjoy the cold, and the losing, in Buffalo Mr Owens
The fact that Cleveland had no interest in re-sigining him, no one else was interested, and that he was willing to sign only a one year deal have me a bit concerned about this guy, regardless of his numbers. I would imagine that the Birds might add another safety into the mix via the draft and ramp up the competition even more. Hopefully, said draftee is the next Ed Reed.
