Phil Sheridan has a column in the Inquirer today which discusses whether Brian Westbrook should make the Pro Bowl this year, or not. Andy Reid says yes, Sheridan says maybe not. I say, yes (but I named my dog after Westbrook so take my opinion with a grain of salt).
Sheridan uses heaps of stats and rankings among NFC running backs to make his argument against Westbrook's inclusion, but he omits a very important stat from his argument. Westbrook is 6th in the league in rushing yards, 4th in total yards from scrimmage behind Frank Gore, Tiki Barber and Stephen Jackson. What Sheridan fails to mention is that Westbrook has more touchdowns, 11, than all of them. Jackson is close with 10, Gore has 7 and Tiki Barber has 2. It's absolutely ridiculous that you'd even consider voting for Tiki when he's scored 2 times on 340 touches.
Westbrook isn't leading NFC running backs in touchdowns, Marion Barber of the Cowboys is. Which brings this discussion full circle. Honestly, who cares about the Pro Bowl? Sheridan must've had some time to kill while he's polishing up his Eagles/Cowboys piece for later in the week. This game is going to have a playoff atmosphere, expect to see Jerry Jones on the sidelines, expect T.O. to be vocal and vile. Expect Brian Dawkins to destroy T.O. if he dares to come over the middle. Expect Tony Romo to shrivel under the most pressure he's faced in his young career. Expect Brian Westbrook to make multiple trips to the endzone. I cannot wait for this game.
UPDATE: Westbrook got the shaft. Barber and his two touchdowns will be going to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl, Westbrook will have to settle for a shot in the playoffs.
