Birds work out Eric Wood

NFL.com's pro day blog reports that the Birds have worked out Louisville center Eric Wood.  In my opinion Wood was one of the most impressive players at the combine this year.

Wood profiles as a player I'd naturally gravitate to - he's durable (set Louisville record for consecutive starts) and nastier than Andy Reid's bathroom after a cigarette and cup of French roast.  He's also got those "football" intangibles and he's smart.  NFL Draft Scout currently rates Wood as the 3rd best center (and likely 3rd round pick) in the draft trailing only Alex Mack and Max Unger.

The Birds have a number of potential centers on the roster - Jackson, Nick Cole, and Mike McGlynn - and it looks like Reid might open the position up for competition this summer.  In his recent interview with the media, Andy Reid threw in a slight jab at Jackson's game:

"I thought Jamaal did a pretty good job in the pass game. I think he can keep working on some stuff in the run game."

Although it seems unlikely, the Birds could also inject a true center into the competitive mix.  Wood wouldn't be a bad pick, given his versatility and ability to play bother center and guard at the next level.

Plus, the guy looks like the fat kid from Bad Santa, so he'd attract levels of hot ass never seen before at the NovaCare Complex.

I don't think the Bad Santa joke can ever be topped. I almost hope we don't draft him because I'll never lose that image (although I was fine with a center called "honey buns", so I'm sure I'll recover).

The center class looks pretty strong this year, so this wouldn't be a bad year to draft for the future. I know we have a couple of guys on the roster who "can" play center, but it always feels better when you have guys who actually played meaningful games at center. I thought the kid from Penn State would get a little more praise, but apparently he has short arms (haters can insert Jeff Lurie joke here).

The kid in Bad Santa didn't even have a name, he's listed as "The Kid." That's too bad because there would be some serious nickname potential there. The center class is good this year.

The PSU kid seems like the sort that will be a starter in the league but only as an "overachiever" or a "scrapper." I'd rather draft a stud.
