The Birds are
expected to announce the hiring of former defensive coordinator of the Cowboys, Brian Stewart in the next day or two. Stewart spent two year's as the defensive coordinator before being dismissed after the 44-6 drubbing the Birds handed the Boys in Week 17 of last year.
Although Stewart was the acting defensive coordinator in Dallas, his actual role was much less clear as Wade Phillips would take over defensive play-calling duties at times. Honestly, all I really know about Stewart was gleaned from last year's Hard Knocks documentary on HBO. Stewart was portrayed as a profane hothead who really got on his players. To me, his methods seemed a little juvenile, but to his credit, I can't say what players he was reprimanding (could be clueless undrafted free agents) and how much the whole rant was taken out of context.
Stewart had been reprimanded for his
behavior with players in the past. During his first year as defensive coordinator, Stewart was reprimanded by Jerry Jones for pushing his players too hard in training camp. Looks like some of the Dallas players agreed with Jones:
While Stewart tells jokes and tries to pump up the players before practices and team meetings to loosen them up, several players said he needs to relax, and the drill is an example of him overdoing things.
Wow, this is
going to be an interesting year. Couple Stewart
with the Birds' new special teams coordinator Ted Daisher and we've got a Molotov
cocktail ready to go. If you don't
remember, Daisher was the Raiders coach who "shoved an intern, screamed at an
assistant, yelled at players who looked at him and challenged players to
fistfights" during a 23-14 loss to the Houston Texans.
Awesome.
Dude, I totally remember this guy from Hard Knocks as well. He did seem like he was unneccesarily harsh on his players. Perhaps not as annoying as the Cowboy's TE coach though. That busted Cornelius Bennett's balls something fierce. I seem to remember McDermott being rather annoying as well, from the little behind the films stuff we catch on the Birds. Should be a fun camp. Get some players.
Get a little, get get a little now.
